Three different systems are used:

-- A stationary radio receiver, make Philips with a horizontal and a vertical dipole antenna of wire and band cable placed in the same room as the receiver.
-- A portable FM / DAB radio receiver, make Lumatron using the receiver s telescopic antenna, which is adjusted for best reception by the listening position.
-- A portable FM radio receiver, make Sony using the receiver s telescopic antenna, which is adjusted for best reception by the listening position. In order to reduce splatter the two ceramic filters of the receiver are replaced with narrower filters with a bandwidth of 150 kHz.

A listening test is also performed with an older portable radio (Sony SW30) in order to illustrate the performance of older/cheaper radio receivers.

The quality of reception is assessed as follows:
-- OK = reception of good quality
-- (OK) = reception with little noise or splatter that is not clearly annoying
-- (Empty) = no reception or reception with distinct noise or splatter

The result is shown in Table 1.

Only the transmitter with the best signal strength is shown when a station broadcasts from several transmitters (two transmitters are, however, shown for Radio Køge and Radio Odsherred).

The number of stations received in OK or (OK) quality is shown at the bottom of the table, including the total number of stations that can be received on the Philips system on two antennas.

The distance to the transmitter is indicated to give an idea of the signal strength.

Table 1 MHz P.(H) P.(V) Lum. Philips receives only 7 and 6 stations in OK quality on a horizontal and vertical dipole, but in total 9 stations are received in OK-quality, when the best antenna is chosen. When stations in (OK) quality are included the stationary Philips system with two antennas receives as many stations as the portable Lumatron receiver, but the quality is lower overall. The reason is that the dipoles are fixed and can not be adjusted to an optimum position for all stations. The reception is clearly poorer if the Philips system is used with only one dipole.

Sony with narrow ceramic filters is slightly better than the Lumatron receiver.

Philips can as the only system receives stations on 90.1 and 95.5 MHz. The reason may be that the dipole antenna has correct polarization and gives a slightly stronger signal than a telescopic antenna.

SW30 can receive six stations in OK-quality, but nothing else. It is unfit for the reception of weak local radio stations.

The table shows that the number of receivable local radio stations can be increased substantially by replacing an older / cheaper FM receiver with a modern receiver with good filters and integrated circuits. Two types of receivers can be used if indoor reception is possible: A stationary system with two indoor antennas in fixed positions and a portable radio with an adjustable telescopic antenna.
