It is necessary to have the best possible conditions in all stages. A modern FM radio is best suited to receive weak stations. The sensitivity and selectivity are good and it is equipped with a processor that is able to produce decent audio. The radio can be stationary or portable.

Old and quite cheap receivers can rarely live up to the requirements, so they are not suitable for the purpose. But it need not be costly to acquire a usable receiver. There are excellent receivers on the market at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, no receiver is specially designed for the reception of weak local radios. Many modern receivers have RDS, which means that the filters are broader than necessary to receive the audio part of the signal.

-- Examples of usable radio receivers

It is not in advance to say which receiver is best suited for reception of local radio stations. It must be tested. The pictures show some receivers that fulfill the requirements.

The stationary system from Philips is quite good and has the merit of automatic tuning away from a transmitter that produces splatter.

The stationary system from Amitech is a combination of internet radio, FM radio, CD player and mp3 recorder and player. It is a very modern radio.

The receiver named Lumatron is the best of the large portable radio receivers to receive local radio. It is as good as the Philips system. It has DAB and a good audio reproduction in stereo. It is sold in Coop stores in Scandinavia.

The receiver from Eton is sensitive, but could be more selective, since it has neither RDS nor stereo speakers. Noises may occur when the signal is weak. The receiver can be connected to an external FM antenna, if needed. It can also receive medium waves and short waves.

The receiver from Panasonic can only receive FM and has a slightly lower audio quality than the Lumatron and Eton receivers. The sensitivity is good enough to use the receiver for local radio.

The portable receiver from Philips is a good choice of a medium size receiver. It can receive FM as well as DAB. The sound is very clear.

The receiver named Degen is a small, but very impressive device. Sensivity and selectivity are tiptop. The tuning step in the FM band is 25 kHz so that interference may sometimes be avoided in tuning one step away from an interfering station. A plug is provided for an external antenna.

AM and SSB radios can be received in the frequency range from 100 to 30,000 kHz. The receiver can be purchased on eBay UK.

The Philips system and Lumatron are used in the following listening test as representatives of stationary and portable radios that are suitable for the reception of local radio. They are equally good, but strangely enough, there are a few stations, which one receiver can receive and the other not, and visa versa. Thus, it may be a good idea to try several radio receivers.

Whether a stationary system or a portable receiver is chosen depends on the usage and the desired audio quality. A stationary system produces better audio, while a portable radio offers mobility and easy adjustment of the antenna.
